Aspirated Foreign Body : X ray findings

  • Air trapping evidenced by hyperinflation and hyperlucency of affected hemithorax(obstructive emphysema)
  • Mediastinal shift to unaffected side. (due to hyperinflation of affected side)
  • Children will more often display signs of air-trapping while adults will more often show atelectasis

upper photo from here, showing Right sided air trapping.

During expiration, right side hyperinflation becomes more evident because thy right side cannot deflate. And mediastinum shift to unobstructed side.

If the patient is a child or otherwise not able to cooperate for an expiratory study, a decubitus view of the chest, with the suspected side down, may show a lack of collapse of the air-trapped lung
